Five Uses for Coconut Oil

Top 5 Uses For Coconut Oil with Vita Coco

When Vita Coco contacted me asking whether I would like to receive a gift box of their Coconut Oil I wondered “what am I meant to do with it?” After a little bit of research, I found that coconut oil has a world of uses and benefits. Today I’m going to share with you 5 of my favourites (trust me, there are a lot more):

This technique I found is known as oil pulling. Coconut oil makes a great and organic substitute for mouthwash as it contains Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, and also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Here’s how you do it!

What you need:

  • 2 tsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil

  • Place oil in your mouth and let melt.
  • Swish around for 20 minutes. Don’t do aggressive with it though, it’s not mouthwash!
  • Spit out the oil.
  • Rinse mouth thoroughly with warm water before brushing.

Although I wouldn’t actively jump to eating coconuts they are an incredibly useful and healthy addition to food. It increases energy, contains (good) fatty acids, cures hangovers, improves cholesterol. So, if you’re not a HUGE fan of the ol’ coconuts you can always add them to your diet in a sneaky way…

Coconut Oil and Greens Smoothie

What you need:

  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup of frozen mango slices
  • ½ cup of fresh orange juice
  • 2 tsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil (warmed)

  • In a blender combine all ingredients except coconut oil and frozen mango.
  • Slowly add liquefied oil to the mixture and blend again.
  • Add frozen mango and blend until completely smooth.

There are tonnes of great coconut oil recipes online! Give them a try.

When you blow dry and straighten your hair on a daily basis it can get dry, brittle and limp. But coconut oil puts back natural and smooth moisturising nutrients to get your locks back into shape!

What you need:

  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tbsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 egg yolk (optional, adds shine)

  • In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until smooth and blended.
  • Massage into hair until fully coated and let sit for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse hair twice with shampoo or until no oil remains.

Another method is to:

  • While in the shower, melt your coconut oil by running the jar under the warm water.
  • After shampooing, apply a generous amount of the oil to wet strands and twist hair into a bun.
  • Let it sit for at least five minutes before rinsing.
  • After rinsing with water, wash again with a small amount of shampoo and conditioner.

I found when I used the second method my hair was smoother and blonder!

I’m not sure about you but sometimes I find alcohol bases make up removers a little overpowering. I also find many dry my skin out so I have to use extra eye cream at night. However, with coconut oil, I am able to naturally remove makeup without chemicals.

What you need:

  • 1 tsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil

  • Using your ring finger, pat the oil around the eye.
  • Gently wipe the oil over lashes and lids in a downward motion.
  • With a clean cloth, wipe away the makeup.
  • Rinse off any residue with warm water.

Whether it’s on your lips, hands or body, rubbing coconut oil into your skin will instantly help in softening it up. The smaller jar of Vita Coco’s oil is perfect for carrying around in your hand bag!

I tend to use the oil once I’m out of the shower and my skin is warm to help it melt in better. It smells amazing and leaves my skin super soft. In addition to using it as a body butter, I wash my face in it whilst in the shower.

There we have it! 5 of my favourite uses for coconut oil by Vita Coco. You can see more fab uses for it on their website. Let me know if you try any of these methods or if you have a recipe you use for it!

Great post. Very informative and interesting. I really want to use Coconut Oil but I think I will have to look into different ways because I don’t want anything to happen to my skin and hair.

I wouldn’t worry about your skin or hair as Vita Coco is completely raw coconut with no added ingredients. If you wash it off properly only good things can happen 🙂 xx
