What to do When You Lose Your Job

How to Deal with Losing Your Job

If any of you follow me on Twitter, you will know that I lost my job this week. I hadn’t done anything wrong, it was a business decision which is completely understandable. Don’t get me wrong, I was devastated at first. I cried until I had a headache. But after about half an hour and a cup of tea, I pulled myself together. Took a deep breath and thought “think positive.”

Be professional – Don’t get angry in front of your employees. They will understand if you get upset but don’t get aggressive.

Think positive – There is a door of opportunity to be opened. Once you lose your job, it isn’t the end of the world. You can do whatever you like now and even try something different.

Don’t worry – You’re not alone and although that may not make you feel any better it does mean there are lots of ways to support you in finding you a new career. There are advisors, job centres and recruitment agencies that can make you appealing to employers. When it comes to worrying about bills there are tips through the Citizen’s Advice Bureau  and even banks such as Barclay’s.

Relax – Get home, make yourself a hot drink, take a bubble bath and relax. Put on a good movie  and sleep on it. It is no good thinking about it now.

Have a fresh start – After a good night’s sleep get together a game plan. Update your CV, write various covering letters and hit those job opportunities. Send hundreds of CV’s and covering letters, make sure all your details are correct and keep your phone nearby.

I know how you are feeling. It’s a shock to think that you are no longer getting a salary and you no longer have a routine… It makes you feel a little bit empty and makes you lack confidence but you are better than what you are feeling right now.

These decisions are made because it’s best for the business and has nothing to do with your personality. If however you have been fired you need to rethink how you work and what you can do to improve.  There is only one way to go and that is up. Smile so bigger and better things can come to you. Good luck and I wish you all the best.
